Your question is a good one. First read some books on basic buddhist history and
teachings. I liked "What the Buddha Taught" by Walpola Rahula. Another is " Awakening the Buddha Within" by Lama Surya Das.
Your question brought to mind a qoute or book title, can't
remember. But it's a great Zen saying.
